My stories around these ideas are not unique. You may even see a little bit of yourself in them. With shame there is no possibility for grace.
With shame I am personally “bad” – I am bad. With guilt I have only made a bad choice or poor choice or ill-informed choice or whatever – and I can recover from that. I can apologize. I can ask forgiveness and find out if there is anything I can do to make it up or make it better for another. With shame I am bad and can never be anything but bad. With guilt I admit I am wrong or made a mistake or didn't have enough information or whatever else I might discover in the situation and then I can move forward to make reparations.
